The city of Cerignola is located in the province of Foggia, in the Puglia region of southeastern Italy. It gave its name to one of the world’s largest olive varieties – Bella di Cerignola (Italian for ‘Beauty of Cerignola’).
‘Bella di Cerignola’ green olives are one of the most popular table olive varieties. Thanks to their striking appearance – characterized by large size and uniform color – as well as their meaty, crisp texture and savory flavor, they are often used in aperitifs, cocktails, and various appetizers.
A bit of history:
‘Bella di Cerignola’ olives are also known as “Roman” olives. Legend has it that they originated from the Roman ‘orchites’ variety, which Roman troops carried as provisions on long journeys. As the army moved through the Apulia region, olive pits would fall to the ground during feasts and rest stops. Over time, they sprouted, giving rise to this olive variety in the Cerignola area.
‘Bella di Cerignola’ olives have a delicate flavor and firm flesh, but what is most striking is their size, which makes this variety one of the largest in the world.
